Ministry Highlight: Dream House

Christina Mix, Houseparent

During a recent cottage day art project, the children were asked to think about and draw their dream house. They were encouraged to dream big: How many rooms would it have? How tall would it be? Who would live there with you?

Some children drew rooms designed for specific people in mind. With decor or colors that they felt that person would like. One resident was dreaming big! He dreamed of having a gaming room, a multiple car garage, a swimming pool on the roof, and a helicopter landing pad with his very own helicopter. Dream big or go home, right? Other kids had rooms for their siblings, their mom, their friends here at the Children's Home; and a few even added a room for their houseparents to come live with them.

The one who touched my heart the most was a five-year-old little girl, she could dream for all those people and have all the things, but what she wanted most in her house was a room for Jesus.

My mind instantly connected to the verse in the Bible when Jesus told his disciples about His Father's house. While the children finished their drawings I told them of how Jesus' Father had the same idea, His name is God. And God has a house with many rooms in it, Jesus is preparing a place for us there. When He returns He will take us to live there with Him.

"My Father's house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am."

- John 14:2-3 (NIV)
