Anyone who has gone through a difficult time knows the comfort and love pets can bring. From the wag of tails greeting you at the door to the soft purr of a cat sitting on your lap, pets show us unconditional love and support no matter what is going on in life.
This comfort might seem small, but it is all part of God's grand design. Animals weren't an afterthought when God created everything. In a world full of highs and lows, pets are there through it all. They are a small glimpse and reminder of the unconditional love of a God who gave us these companions. They show us we are not alone.
At NMBCH, we serve children and families in some of their hardest moments. We see the many struggles that life throws at us and the heavy weight that people, even small children, can carry. Healing takes time and uncomfortable conversations, but something as small as a houseparent's friendly dog or a trip to the barn to visit the animals can start the process and let the children we serve know that they are safe and truly cared for here.
At the barn especially, secrets can be shared and trust is formed between children and animals. They do not know past mistakes, and they don't ask questions: they are simply present and ready to show love. In this readiness, they give children who have been hurt insight into how to love correctly.
Our Lord draws near to the brokenhearted in unexpected ways. He shows up ready to listen and care for us, no matter the past situations that got us to the state we are now. He sees every hurting child and family and offers that hope, solace, and unconditional love that pets give us only a glimpse of.
God, in His kindness, often weaves comfort into His creation. sometimes it comes through as a counselor's guidance. Sometimes through a houseparent's steady care. And sometimes it's through the simple loyalty of a four-legged friend who reminds us that love can be safe. As we continue serving children and families across New Mexico, we are grateful for all the tools for healing God provides in His goodness.
