Liz Wooley, Family Ministries Christian Counselor.
At New Mexico Baptist Children's Home & Family Ministries, we believe that mental health is just as important as physical health. Just like you visit a doctor when you're feeling sick, it's okay—and wise—to care for your mental and emotional well-being, too.
We all experience tough seasons, and being aware of your mental health can make a big difference when those moments come.
The good news? There are simple, everyday actions you can take to support your mental wellness—and you don't have to do it alone.
Here are some ways to care for your mental health:
Take Care of Your Physical Health
Your body and mind are connected. When you take care of your body, you're also supporting your emotional well-being.
- Engage in regular physical activity: Movement helps reduce stress and anxious energy. Whether it's taking a walk, playing a sport, doing art, cleaning your home, or even laughing, find ways to move your body that bring you joy.
- Maintain a healthy diet: A balanced diet supports overall wellness and keeps your energy steady.
- Get adequate sleep: Proper rest is crucial for mental function. It prevents fatigue and helps you handle emotional stress better.
Build a Support System
A strong support network is vital for your mental well-being.
- Stay connected: Spend time with family and friends who uplift you. Offer support to others—it often helps both of you.
- Be available to others: Sometimes, showing up for someone else can strengthen your own resilience.
- Set boundaries with toxic people: If someone consistently brings stress or negativity into your life, it's okay to limit their influence. Protecting your peace is part of staying mentally strong.
Embrace Self-Care
Make time for what refreshes your soul.
- Do something just for you: Whether it's a favorite hobby, learning a new skill, or planning something to look forward to, little joys add up.
- Start small: Even 10–15 minutes of reading or a creative project in the evening can lift your spirits.
Practice Gratitude
Gratitude is a powerful mindset shift.
- Focus on what you're thankful for: Think about or jot down people, memories, and blessings—big or small—that bring joy.
- Examples: A safe place to live, the love of family, the gift of a new day.
Try Relaxation Techniques
Calming practices help settle both mind and body.
- Deep breathing, prayer, meditation, music, or progressive muscle relaxation are excellent ways to slow down and reconnect.
Reframe Unhelpful Thoughts
Your thoughts impact how you feel.
- Challenge negative self-talk: Replace it with encouragement and truth.
- Focus on what you can control: Let go of worry over things outside your control and take action where you can.
Build Resilience
Reflect on your journey and God's faithfulness.
- Think about past challenges: What helped you make it through? What strengths did you discover or develop?
- Remember: If He brought you through before, He can do it again.
